Online counseling is more popularly known as distance therapy or e-counseling. This is a new area in the field of counseling and is continuing to grow. The APA or American Psychology Association has long been recognizing online treatment methods starting the year of 1995. A number of research studies have been done that show that both the therapist and client have been of benefit with online counseling. Furthermore, it has been proven that online counseling is as effective as face to counseling, specifically for certain types of disorders. Even the well-known academic journal, CyberPsychology Journal, supports the claims regarding online counseling.

Now, when it comes to online counseling, there are some things that you need to know. With online counselor, therapy or counseling is done with the use of either video conferencing, internet telephone, online chat, or e-mail or a mix of all of those just mentioned. However, what has been proven to be the most effective is counseling through video conferencing. This is specifically effective for people who are residing in areas where there is little to no access to any certified and experienced English speaking therapist.

It can be said that the type of person who is in need of counseling are those that have type A personalities. Type A people are the ones typically employed in jobs that demand a lot from them such as being senior executives or diplomats in multinational companies. Couples that need counseling are also those that typically have type A personalities. One of the most common qualities when it comes to people with type A personalities is their being perfectionists. Being perfectionists is one of the reasons why a lot of them get anxiety because it is hard to always be perfect. Nobody is perfect. And no person is ever made to be perfect in any way.

Some spouses are also in need of getting online counselor services. One of the most common reasons why they do is they have a feeling that they cannot keep everything under control unlike other spouses that are the same as them. They think that it is a must that they must always be both self-reliant and strong.

Most of these spouses are those that come from professions of high power and then choose to just stay at home. Because their spouses are the only ones working for the family, then they eventually have a loss of identity. When this happens then they not only get feelings of low self-esteem but also feelings of depression.
